Window Regulators
A lot of car mechanisms are difficult to understand because they're hidden away, out of sight. Car windows are a good example. You can never see just what makes the windows go up and down, but you'd be surprised at how simple they really are.
Car windows are connected to the electric motor that makes them go up and down through a window regulator. It's a mechanism containing several simple parts. First, there's a metal bracket, which attaches to the bottom of the window glass. Next, there's a lifting mechanism, which is a lever that raises and lowers the window in a straight and controlled manner. Finally, there is an arrangement of gears to convert the motion of the motor (or hand crank in manual windows) into the motion needed to operate the window.
One of the main causes of damage when it comes to window regulators happens in the winter. If your windows are frozen shut and you try to open or close them, the gears can become stripped and fail to work. Luckily, it's not a very difficult problem to fix. All you need to do is replace the window regulator itself.
